Chicago, Illinois is the third largest city in the United States and one of the largest
in the world. It offers an enormous amount of sightseeing, cultural and entertainment
opportunities when you are not partaking in conference activities. More about Chicago can
be be found at the Chicago web site (which also
includes an interactive map).
DePaul University is one of the elite Catholic universities in the U.S., and its
Computer Science graduate school is currently the world's largest. The school of Computer Science, Telecommunications and
Information Systems, affectionately referred to as CTI, is located in the Loop in
downtown Chicago, although currently classes are offered at five different campuses in the
city and suburbs, with a sixth soon to be built. Because of the constant change in the
Computer Science field, three different Bachelors degrees, seven different Masters
degrees, and a doctoral program are all available. DePaul's reputation among Chicago's
business is unmatched as evidenced by CTI's 100% job placement rate.
Coming to Chicago
The Palmer House Hilton
and DePaul Center, the building where the workshop will be held, are located near each
other in downtown Chicago, as shown on our map. (More detailed information
on getting around downtown will be provided at the hotel.) Once you're downtown, you will
not need a car to get around.
If you are flying in, you will arrive at either O'Hare International Airport or at
Midway Airport. Explained below are directions for getting from each of these airports to
the hotel.
Arriving at O'Hare International Airport
Information about the airport can be found at the O'Hare
website. Among other things, information about how to get to downtown can be found
there. Some of that information is summarized here.
- Cab: The cost from the airport to downtown is approximately $30.00, not including tip.
More information can be found at the City
of Chicago Consumer Services website.
- Shuttle: These are busses operated by the Continental Air Transport Company. The
cost is $16.00 one-way, $29.00 roundtrip. The busses pick up outside the baggage claim
areas of terminals 1, 2, and 3.
- Public transportation: In Chicago, public transportation is provided by the Chicago Transit Authority. From O'Hare, one can
take the Blue Line el train to downtown. The station is located underground near terminal
2. From there, the train runs on or above ground until it approaches downtown, where it
becomes a subway. Get off at the Monroe stop and leave by the Monroe Street exit. You are
now at Dearborn and Monroe. Walk east along Monroe. The next street you come to is State
Street. Cross that and continue walking for half a block, where you will see the entrance
to the Palmer House Hilton.
Arriving at Midway Airport
Information about the airport can be found at the City of Chicago Midway website.
For some reason, the site does not have information on how to get downtown. The
information below should help.
- Cab: The cost from the airport to downtown is approximately $20.00, not including tip.
More information can be found at the City
of Chicago Consumer Services website.
- Shuttle: These are busses operated by the Continental Air Transport Company. The
cost is $11.00 one-way, $20.00 roundtrip.
- Public transportation: In Chicago, public transportation is provided by the Chicago Transit Authority. From Midway, one can
take the Orange Line el train to downtown. The station is located aboveground east of the
airport. From there, the train runs aboveground to downtown. At downtown, the train enters
a loop that circles the area. Get off at the Madison and Wabash stop, which is on the
fourth leg of the loop. Walk downstairs to Madison and walk one and a half blocks block
south along Wabash to the Palmer House Hilton.
